Hardwood Species versus Softwood Species
Hardwood species are not necessarily a harder material that is denser and softwood species are not necessarily a softer material that is less dense. The difference between hardwood and softwood actually has to do with plant reproduction. All trees reproduce by seeds, but the seed structure varies. Hardwood species are angiosperms that produce seeds with some sort of covering, i.e. a fruit such as an apple or a hard shell such as an acorn. Softwood species, on the other hand, are gymnosperms or coniferous. Wood species like the Pine, which grow seeds in hard cones, are an example of softwood.
